What to Bring to Your Lesson

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • HELMET.  Helmets are required for all riders who have not yet reached their 18th birthday and for all riders of any age who are jumping or negotiating obstacles such as bridges, ground poles, cavaletti or pedestals. Schooling helmets are available.
  • LONG, FITTED PANTS
  • BOOTS WITH AN APPROPRIATE HEEL
  • GLOVES
  • WELL-FITTED CLOTHING
If you are taking English riding lessons, you might find a fitted shirt and breeches or jodhpurs to be the most comfortable and also give your instructor the ability to clearly see and evaluate your position in the saddle.  Tall boots or half-chaps prevent your lower legs from getting pinched in the stirrup leathers.  To protect your hands, gloves should be worn.

If you are taking Western riding lessons, you might find a fitted, button-down shirt and jeans to be the most comfortable and also give your instructor the ability to clearly see and evaluate your position in the saddle.  Wrangler jeans have the thicker seam on the outside, making them the most comfortable for riding.  Western boots with a heel are designed to keep your feet from slipping through the stirrup.
